Scoil Mhuire Newsletter December 2014.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Holidays are coming! Only 7 more sleeps and hopefully you will all continue to be sane until then! We close on Friday at 12.30 but infants can be collected at 12 to avoid traffic chaos at the gate. We re-open on Monday 5th January.

Weather Preparation

There are some predictions of very cold and extreme weather for the end of December /early January. Hopefully it will not come to pass but just in case please be aware of the following:

  • Make sure we have your correct Text-a-Parent contact number as it is our primary contact with parents
  • In extreme weather the BOM will make a decision around closure and relay it to parents via Text-a-Parent . If networks are out the  local radio will be used .
  • Children will be bringing home a number of school books/workbooks over the holidays. If the need arises, teachers will allocate work which will be communicated through Text-a-Parent. It will also be  posted on our website.
  • If networks are down get your child to engage in some reading and story writing activities.

Let’s hope we don’t have any of the above!!!

Carol service

Congratulations to Mr. O’Connor’s 5th /6th for leading our Carol Service on Dec 10th . The service was a memorable event with the participation of all the other classes and was a lovely start to the Christmas season. Many thanks to Margaret Bowe and Hilda Kent for costuming the children. A special word of thanks to Mr O’Connor for organising some of his musical friends to accompany  the carols.

New fitness initiatives

In January / February our 4 senior classes (4th -6th ) will have soccer skills  every Friday morning with FAI local coaches.

As a novel initiative some junior classes will have Fun Fitness classes with Lourde Connick. This is part of our focus on Healthy lifestyles, funded by the Board of Management. These will be run over 5 weeks starting Monday 12th January.

We are also looking at some dance “taster” lessons from Becci Whelan.

Music Mobile Workshop

Following a successful visit from the Music Mobile Workshop last year they have been invited back to Scoil Mhuire this year. They will do a singing workshop  with a number of classes on Tuesday 13th January.

Seasonal singing in Cherrygrove

One of our school traditions is a visit to Cherrygrove Nursing Home by 6th class to sing carols and Christmas songs for the residents. This year was no exception. Ms O’Connor and Mr O’ Connor’s 6th classes gave a fine performance of seasonal songs. Sinéad and Dermot Clancy also played some traditional music on fiddle and mandolin with great competence.

Library events

Of interest to our youngest pupils or pre-schoolers at home: Saturdays @11.15am is Story morning in New Ross Library. “Come along with your under 5’s to hear some tall tales”.

Enrolment for 2015/16.

It’s that time of year already! Enrolment packs for next year’s Junior Infant intake will be available from Monday 5th January from Ann in the office. The enrolment period is from Jan 5th – Feb 27th 2015. While we post notices all around the parish and in the local paper there may be families unfamiliar with our enrolment procedures so we would ask you to mention the dates to potential families who do not have children already in Scoil Mhuire.

We wish all our families a peaceful and Happy Christmas! Nollaig faoi shéan is faoi mhaise daoibh go léir!
